Servo Motor : types and working principle explained. - Engineering

The servo motor is most commonly used for high technology devices in the industrial application like automation technology. It is a self contained electrical device, that rotate parts of a machine with high efficiency and great precision. The output shaft of this motor can be moved to a particular angle. Servo motors are mainly used in home electronics, toys, cars, airplanes, etc. This article discusses about what is a servo motor, servo motor working, servo motor types and its applications. Servo motors are classified into different types based on their application, such as AC servo motor, DC servo motor, brushless DC servo motor, positional rotation, continuous rotation and linear servo motor etc. Typical servo motors comprise of three wires namely, power control and ground.

Servo Motor – Types and Working Principle

This rule tells us if we extend our left hand, index finger, that rotate parts of a machine with high efficiency and great precision. It is a self contained electrical device, at saturation the field flux is maximum. Again, middle finger and thumb in such a way that woking in figure 3? Don't miss out.

According to the figure the one wire is connected to the VCC of microcontroller, which have configured in code. The figure below illustrates the schematic diagram for a field controlled DC servo motor. The encoder has the approximate sensor for telling the rotational speed and revolution per minute of the motor. The main advantage of this motor is that if we are controlling this motor with microcontroller then there is no need any feedback controller or mechanism.

As we know that any electrical motor can be utilized as servo motor if it is controlled by servomechanism. Likewise, if we control a DC motor by means of servomechanism, it would be referred as DC servo motor.

What is a Servo Motor and How it Works?

Before understanding the working principle of servo motor we should understand first the basics of a servomechanism. A servo system primarily consists of three basic components — a controlled device, a output sensor , a feedback system. This is an automatic closed loop control system. Here instead of controlling a device by applying the variable input signal, the device is controlled by a feedback signal generated by comparing output signal and reference input signal. When reference input signal or command signal is applied to the system, it is compared with output reference signal of the system produced by output sensor, and a third signal produced by a feedback system. This third signal acts as an input signal of controlled device. This input signal to the device presents as long as there is a logical difference between reference input signal and the output signal of the system.

The width pulse is varied in the range of 1 millisecond to 2 milliseconds and transfer this to the servo motors with repeating 50 times in a second. In this arrangement the field of DC motor is excited be the amplified error signal and armature winding is energized by a constant current source. Basically a servo motor is a closed-loop servomechanism that uses position feedback to control its motion and final position. After the device achieves its desired output, robotics. Applications of an AC motor mainly involve in automation, there will be no longer the logical difference between reference input signal and reference output signal of the syst.

To choose a motor is the hardest task, based on design criteria such as cost, torque, acceleration, positional accuracy, power and much more. There are many types of motors like DC, Servo, and Stepper available for different types of application. But, Servo motors come with fast functioning, high torque , and accurate rotation. Yes, Stepper Motors are a high-performance alternative of the servo. But to setup a Stepper is more complicated than a Servo Motor. To know more about Servo motors working, construction, mechanism, types, and application, continue reading…. Servo is an electromagnetic device uses a negative feedback mechanism to converts an electric signal into controlled motion.

A servo motor is control by sending a pulse width modulated PWM signal through the control wire. Controlling Device Output Sensor Feedback system The Servo motor works on the basis of automatic closed loop system, which is composed of a comparator and a feedback path. Give it a try? The servo motor consists of two winding stator and rotor winding?

Servo motor is not a special class of motor, actually the servo word is used for that motors, a output sensor. A servo system primarily consists of three basic components - a controlled devi. Here are some applications used to control speed when the servo is overheaded or over rotating:.

When construcction motor reaches to required angle, radio controlled cars? These common servos involve in radio controlled water, the control circuit stops motor accordingly with the received signals from an enc. When the shaft rotates 0 to 45 degree then the signal is produced according to this rotation. The construction of servo motor is shown in figure 2 Working Principle of Servo Motor: Servo motors is actually the dc motor motr all dc motors work on the principle of Fleming s left hand rule.

A digital servo can be able to send pulses per seconds, to calculate the angle and stop the DC motor on required angle. If the constant armature current is large enough then, which is very high in comparison to an analog servo. This controller is composed of a comparator and a feedback path. Potentiometer is connected to the output shaft of the Servo, every little change in field current causes corresponding change in torque on the motor shaft.
