Michael Wolff's 'Siege' and Trump Tell-All Books - The Atlantic

It officially hit shelves today. There are many questions about the book, not the least of which is how much is verifiably true. But it seems to me the simplest question is: Should I read it? Whether you follow Trump on Twitter out of devotion or outrage, the answer is simple: Yes, read it. Admittedly, this is Beltway drama, so there are no great songs or evil twins, but there is manipulation and betrayal. This would be the case for any White House but more so in this one — portrayed as being unmoored from ideology and policy and driven by the whims of its malleable leader.

Almost every American president has been faced with the scourge of the political tell-all, as former political operatives, hangers-on and senior administration figures, from secretary of state to CIA director, rush to spill the beans on their time near the centre of power. Unfortunately for Donald Trump, that moment has come sooner rather than later. Less than a year into his presidency, Michael Wolff has published a new book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House , one of the first attempts to lift the lid on the Trump presidency. Queues of impatient readers lined up for hours outside bookstores on publication night, publishers Henry Holt are racing to print new copies, and an internet meme has been born showing North Korean leader Kim Jong-un chuckling hysterically as he leafs through the book. All the time the author is gleefully looking on as the sales roll in. Wolff himself is a problematic figure. Controversy accompanied his book on Rupert Murdoch, when he was accused of stretching the truth.

Latest Issue. Past Issues. Here we go again: another juicy book about the White House, early leaks, a round of flat denials, shortly to be followed—in all likelihood—by a set of fevered interpretations and recriminations. The book is Siege , by Michael Wolff. But the bigger problem is the format. What more can we learn about a president who is already so heavily exposed? Once upon a time, the tell-all would actually tell something new about a president.
