During the long days of summer, it's easy to forget the dark. The slow, dissolving twilights and bright mornings have it on the run; by midsummer, you can go to bed at 10pm and wake at 6am and miss it completely. But at this time of year, when the northern hemisphere nights are pressing up against the window and we're filling our houses with lamps and fires and Christmas decorations to beat back the blackness, it's a different story. Daylight in December is pale and fleeting; by midwinter's day, we're spending two-thirds of our life in the dark. And as the nights draw in, the metaphors come flooding back, too: darkness as absence, darkness as challenge, darkness as threat. The metaphysical struggle between good and evil, dark and light — which Christianity codifies as the birth of Jesus, the light that "shineth in darkness" — is enacted daily. In Darkness and Light , the thoughtful, beautiful opening essay to her collection Findings , Kathleen Jamie considers both the metaphors that darkness furnishes, and darkness itself: "dark as natural phenomenon, rather than as a cover for all that's wicked".

An interesting series of biblical-theological allusions to light and darkness emerge in the Gospel of John. In the first 14 verses of chapter 1, the apostle John takes his readers from the preexistence of Christ through the creation of the world by Christ to the incarnation of Christ. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. When we come to chapter 3, the apostle picks back up on the metaphor of light and darkness. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.

The film is a tale about a small band of contumacious boys and girls that live in a hidden village on a faraway beach; they are the Ivory Rebellion, a feral group of children that are fighting from oppression against an evil queen named Johanna, and her ruthless Onyx Empire. 🚶

  3. L ate in the ninth century in southwest England, Alfred, a Saxon prince fifth in line to the throne of Wessex, came to power following the death of his last brother, Ethelred. It was an unlikely accession; Alfred himself never expected to be in the role. Yet he was to become one of the most influential of all English kings, with a profound effect on the future of his people. His reign lasted 28 years, during which time he held the invading Viking Danes at bay, ultimately making peace with them as they settled in East Anglia. While his later successes against a new Danish invasion from Europe in the s was reason enough for his subsequent fame—he had by now strengthened the army and navy, improved and built strategic forts, conducted wise diplomacy, and captured London—his greatest achievement may be one that is less well known today. 🦸‍♂️
